As part of the EXAM-CLOUD system, an EXAM-SERVER™ is typically located at the image acquisition site to store recent images for six to 12 months, enabling ultra-fast online data availability. Additional online storage is accomplished at two state-of-the-art-data centers housing redundant-mirrored multi-terabyte RAID arrays. These include a CoActiv/ Level (3) Communications Tier-IV center in Stamford, CT, which benefits from the resources of one of the largest communications and Internet backbones in the world. Complementing this is CoActiv’s primary Tier-IV datacenter in Tarrytown, NY, the former Union Carbide World Headquarters built by IBM. Both centers reside on different power grids and Internet peering points to ensure emergency coverage.
Finally exams are also archived permanently to two copies of removable media, one remaining in a CoActiv secure and bonded storage facility and the other sent to the imaging site for local storage and access.
The EXAM-CLOUD system is a study in efficiency and thoughtful system design. As soon as an exam is received from any DICOM modality, it is stored on the onsite EXAM-SERVER and sent immediately to the primary New York data center archive. From there, it is mirrored to the redundant Stamford CoActiv/Level (3) archive. In both sites, exams reside on huge RAID arrays with redundant hot spare drives and electronics, which are supported by high-speed SATA data transfer facilities. Local and remote disc monitoring assures ongoing peak performance. Incredibly, all this is accomplished in a matter of seconds.
As part of everyday PACS operation, users enjoy instant access to any of hundreds of thousands of exams from the archive for comparison purposes from any location on a CoActiv PACS Network. This exam retrieval can be either manually or automatically pre-fetched by an integrated RIS.
CoActiv Data Centers
CoActiv’s two data centers also are outstanding for their sophisticated features. The CoActiv Tarrytown Center is located several stories underground with redundant power, generator fail-over, multi self-healing OC3 direct fiber Internet connections, biometric entry security system and a 7x24x365 fully manned NOC (network operations center). The site is safe, secure and audited for HIPAA privacy and security.
The Level (3) Tier-IV datacenter delivers the fastest archived medical data access available and a range of unique benefits. The center provides an immediate IT cross-connect to link both CoActiv data centers to all Level (3) U.S. and European center locations. This provides customers with ongoing, secure access to medical images and records in more than 23 cities in 15 European countries as well as 77 major U.S. and North American cities on an as-needed basis.
The Stamford center also provides customers with the instant access to 850+ Internet "Points of Presence," 320 Gbps of trans-Atlantic data communications capacity, 1 million miles of installed metropolitan fiber and 78 data centers throughout North America and Europe.
