CoActiv Debuts EXAM-PACS®-ORTHO Your Way at AAOS
Specialized Orthopedic PACS Solutions with Windows 7, iPhone, iPad, Mac Support and More

March 10, 2010—New Orleans— Highlighted by a revolutionary new touch-screen viewing system for the popular Apple iPhone and soon-to-be released iPad, CoActiv Medical (Booth 635) introduces a host of new features for its family of EXAM-PACS web-based and cloud-based orthopedic PACS solutions at the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) conference.

Delivering a sophisticated solution for the needs of every orthopedic practice, CoActiv offers EXAM-PACS-ORTHO, a robust, easy to-use web-based PACS for large, established multi-site orthopedic centers.  Complementing this, EXAM-ESSENTIALS™-ORTHO is an entry-priced product that meets the needs of growing practices today, while offering a proven upgrade path to a more robust product for the future.  With spine labeling, Cobb’s Angle measurement and bi-directional integration with the industry-standard OrthoView surgical planning and templating solution, both products are fine-tuned to meet the needs of today’s orthopedists to transition them easily and seamlessly into the digital age.  Typically, these solutions will realize a savings over a site’s hardcopy image management and storage, making them a sound financial choice in today’s budget-conscious times.

Additionally, for greater convenience, sites may optionally store their images in CoActiv EXAM-VAULT® managed cloud-based, vendor-neutral offsite medical archive, offering Quad-Redundant storage in four separate locations including two Tier-IV data centers.

At AAOS 2010, CoActiv introduces their new full range of orthopedic PACS solutions with support for a full spectrum of operating platforms to cater to the preference of every user.  This includes Windows 7 and Mac OS X with the current OsiriX DICOM viewer, which supports image viewing on both the Apple iPhone and iPad.  CoActiv also provides support for the new OsiriX KDS viewer with FDA clearance, enabling full image viewing, interpretation and management capabilities in a Macintosh environment.

“CoActiv is committed to delivering a product line that caters to our users however they prefer to work.  With our latest features, our orthopedic PACS product line keeps pace with the changing times,” comments Ed Heere, president and CEO of CoActiv Medical.  “Whether you want to view images anytime and anywhere on an iPhone, prefer to work on a Mac at home or are part of a technology-forward practice that moves up immediately to the newest Windows products, CoActiv delivers PACS your way.  Whatever your particular requirements, quite simply, we’ve got it.  This same philosophy has helped build us into one of the fastest growing PACS vendors in the radiology community throughout our long history in the field.”Designed to meet the full range of needs of a sophisticated orthopedic practice, CoActiv EXAM-PACS-ORTHO combines standard orthopedic features with advanced functionalities for sub-specialists. It provides all the features of CoActiv’s world-class radiology PACS--from customizable hanging protocols to color coded worklists and advanced exam routing, offering everything needed for fully automated imaging workflow.  Web-based architecture also provides anywhere anytime image access.  Recognizing that imaging is only a small part of the orthopedist’s workflow, CoActiv EXAM-PACS-ORTHO is extremely affordable and easy to install and use.

To cater to the needs of smaller practices, CoActiv offers Exam-Essentials-Ortho, an extremely affordable, turnkey PACS solution that provides many of the same features as EXAM-PACS-ORTHO for implementation on a smaller scale.  It also includes all necessary hardware and software and will work on most practices’ existing IT networks. “With Exam-Essentials-Ortho, you can convert to an efficient digital environment, in many cases for less you currently pay for your outdated film-based imaging,” comments Heere.

CoActiv’s new iPhone and iPad features rely on bi-directional compatibility with the award-winning OsiriX Mobile viewer, which runs on the iPhone itself.  With EXAM-PACS’ built-in interface, no special software is required other than the open-source OsiriX viewer running on the phone.

“In today’s fast-paced medical environment, immediate, accurate image access is imperative,” comments Heere.  “What better way to provide this than enabling physicians to access imaging workflow right on their iPhone and the iPad in the future?”The new mobile Apple technology connectivity is simple to install and use.  Orthopedists just download the OsiriX application to their device and can begin viewing images immediately. OsiriX has long been the most widely used and top performing Mac OS X DICOM viewer.  It is available from the Apple App Store for a nominal charge.

iPhone users connect through 3G or WiFi to the CoActiv EXAM-PACS server and can search for exams by patient name, accession number, modality and much more.  Exams download to their device instantly and securely using DICOM Query/Retrieve.  Additionally, a special “send” command enables users to push exams instantly to a registered user’s iPhone.  Once displayed, images can be analyzed on the touch screen using a full range of traditional PACS tools, including scroll, pan, zoom and window & level and measurement functions.  All image manipulations and annotations may be saved locally on the device as jpeg files and forwarded to anyone, anywhere in the world using either messaging or email.  An option to remove patient identification ensures these transmissions are in full HIPAA compliance.

Beyond the mobile environment, CoActiv introduces bi-directional support for the full OsiriX DICOM viewer, enabling any user of Mac OS X or higher to view all EXAM-PACS images on a full range of Mac computers.  To access images for reference purposes, users simply download the free OsiriX viewer (V3.6.1 or later) from the OsiriX website and connect to an OsiriX Server running on a Mac on their network or directly to their EXAM-PACS server.

For dedicated Mac users who want diagnostic interpretation capabilities, the new FDA-cleared OsiriX KDS is available for purchase from Kanteron Systems. CoActiv also debuts support for Windows 7, which offers significant benefits over previous Windows versions. “This new, more stable, 64-bit Microsoft operating system can efficiently manage larger amounts of memory than ever before, and that means big benefits for today’s busy radiologists and referring physicians,” comments Heere.  “Users can now have numerous data-intensive exams open at one time to compare images to work in the most efficient manner possible.”  Additionally, users can take advantage of exciting Windows 7 Touch capabilities to scroll through a multi-slice series, zoom and window & level all at the touch of a finger.

“Whatever is new, functional and desirable in PACS is always available at CoActiv first,” said Heere. “That’s an important part of our commitment to our customers.”

CoActiv has always been committed to delivering a PACS that meets the full range of its users needs.  “Now we truly have EXAM-PACS platform for every preference,” he says.  “Whatever you ask for, we’ve got it now—or we will soon.  That’s our philosophy.”
